How is LED IP rated?

IP level refers to the protection level of LED products, which indicates how well they are protected against dust, solid objects and water. The IP rating consists of two numbers, the first indicating the level of protection against solid objects and the second indicating the level of protection against liquids. Are you familiar with RGB LEDs?

IP level is a standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and it is based on the following composition and judgment method:

 - The LED IP level can be understood in five minutes

In the first number, the level of protection against solid objects is indicated, ranging from 0 to 6.
0: No protection, no capability of protection.

1: Prevents solid objects with a diameter greater than 50mm from entering.

Solid objects larger than 12.5mm can be prevented from entering.

Solid objects larger than 2.5mm can be prevented from entering.

4: Prevents solid objects with diameters larger than 1mm from entering.

5: Prevents dust from entering, but not completely.

6: completely dust-free.

The second number indicates the level of protection against liquids, ranging from 0 to 9.
0: No protection, no capability to protect.

1: Prevents vertical drips.

2: Prevents vertical water drops from tilting 15 degrees after entering.

3: Prevents splashing of water.

4: Prevents splashing of water.

5: The water sprayed by the water injector can be prevented from entering.

6: Prevents waves or strong jets of water from entering.

7: Prevents immersion in water within a short period of time.

8: Prevents prolonged immersion in water.

9: Can prevent high pressure, high temperature jet cleaning.

LEDs are IP-rated by combining two numbers, such as IP65, which means complete dust protection (level 6) and preventing the injection direction of the jet water from causing harmful effects (level 5).

LED product specifications and instructions usually specify the IP level of LED products. Check the product documentation or speak with the vendor to find out the IP rating before purchasing. Choose an IP level that is suitable for the environment in which LED products will be used to ensure adaptability and durability.

The higher the IP level, the stronger the protection. As well as the above IP levels, there are also higher levels of IP levels, such as IP69K, suitable for extreme environments with higher protection levels.

What is the right IP level for LED displays?

Choosing the right IP level for LED displays requires consideration of the following factors:

When used indoors or outdoors, LED displays do not need a high IP rating since the indoor environment is relatively clean and not exposed to adverse weather conditions. To protect LED displays from rain, dust, and UV rays, outdoor LED displays must have a higher IP rating.

Consider the specific environmental conditions of the display, such as climate conditions, pollution levels, and operating temperatures. Dust or chemicals can damage displays in deserts or highly polluted areas, for example.

Based on actual requirements, determine the required protection level. It is important to choose an IP grade with a higher level of protection if the display will be exposed to a lot of water or spray. You may be able to get away with a lower IP rating if all you need is dust and splash protection.

Costs and feasibility: Higher IP levels generally mean higher protection capabilities. Select an IP level that provides reasonable protection for the intended working environment based on budget and feasibility considerations.

By explaining your specific application needs to LED display suppliers or manufacturers, they can provide appropriate IP level recommendations according to the environment. To select the appropriate IP level, ensure that local security standards and regulations are followed.
